Inspired by the abundance of Central Otago’s wonderful stonefruit and famous pinot noir wines, friends Jane Shaw and Pauline Murphy set out to create a modern regional range of preserves and baking.
Both dedicated cooks and passionate about seasonal, regional food, the idea for Provisions was born at a combined family picnic at Glenorchy in December 2002. A year later in December 2003, they opened their commercial kitchen and retail shop in the Old Cromwell historic precinct on the shores of Lake Dunstan. And so began the first fruit harvest.
Delicious tree ripened cherries, apricots, peaches and nectarines are sourced from orchards just around the corner in Cromwell. The wonderful aromatic wild thyme that is synonymous with Central Otago is gathered from the nearby hills. Pinot noir grapes are harvested from local vineyards and berries picked from farms throughout Central Otago. Provisions products taste of these real flavours of Central Otago and are handmade in small batches without added flavours, colourings, and preservatives.
The shop sells the Provisions range as well as special baking on Farmers Market days including the world famous “Cromwell sticky buns”.
The Central Otago Farmers Market will run every Sunday in Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb this season.
Husbands Hal and Tom have been instrumental for their encouragement, irreverence and childcare during the long hot summers months of jam and chutney making as have our children Angus, Harriet, Marnie, Elsa and Fae for their selfless quality control and taste testing of products -especially the chocolates and jams - and their charming customer service.
